It's 12:45PM EST and I'm watching Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) challenge CNN (@cnnbrk) in a race to obtain 1,000,000 followers. I think it's the first time anyone has seen anything like this unfold. As I write, both are sitting at around 994,000, with Kutcher in the lead by about 700 followers - he has jumped on a live feed from Ustream to try and attract more followers (and it seems to be working).

Although the outcome is not very important to me, it's neat to witness the hype Twitter has created. I don't ever recall a social networking site attracting this much attention. Although quite tired, I'm staying up to listen to people discuss the race via Twitter and watch Ashton's live feed.

I wonder what will follow Twitter. Is it possible something could surpass this popularity?
