I am someone who likes to watch live sports but does not follow them on a daily basis. In fact, I have been to many sporting events (Blue Jays/Raptors/Maple Leafs games) where I didn't know either the rules or the players. However, my experience is that a hot dog, a beer, and some enthusiastic fans help turn these situations into a good time.
This was pretty much the scenario when a friend graciously passed along 2 tickets to a Toronto FC game. Except that it was way better! First off, I was glad that I took her advice and wore a red shirt since about 99% of the people in attendance were wearing Toronto FC colours - a pretty cool sight in itself. I mean, who doesn't like to feel like they are in solidarity with 20,000 other people?
Next we found our seats in the craziest, loudest, most rambunctious arena I have ever been in. Hardcore fans waved around 9 ft x 9 ft flags while singing their way through a repetoire of about 20 unique cheers under the guidance of a "superfan" with a megaphone. Honestly, I think I watched the fans more than the athletes. A win was celebrated first with confetti, and then on the streets with a makeshift parade that succeeded in scaring off fans from the opposing team.
I don't care if you like soccer/football or not (just don't admit that to anyone at the game) - this is one of the best things to do in Toronto!
